Off I Go!

Today begins my journey to Belize! For those of you who are unfamiliar, Belize is a beautiful little country located in central america facing the gulf of mexico. It is the size of Massachusetts, has beautiful geography. Everything from lush jungle to beautiful beaches. While in here i will be working with a bunch of non profit organizations (NGO) to create a better more sustainable way of life for the belizean people. The team i am here with will be doing everything from helping at orphanages, teaching english to kids, teaching computer, personal finance, and business classes. We are also working with the local hospital in building a dialysis center. Some days we will visit surrounding villages to take blood glucose levels and heart rates for the people. There is alot of public health awareness going on. Everything from teaching about HIV and AIDS to simple things like eating healthy and washing hands. And last the largest project we have is the Soilet system. It is a sustainable waste management system, basically using worms to take care or any waste. This project has been implemented in several other third world countries and working!! So basically thats it! Theres alot of work to be done but it is neat because each day i can choose on what i wold like to work on.

Now on to my first day:
The airport... flew from houston to Belize where i landed at 1030 am and went through customs no problem. I met up with the one sent to meet me ad we had to wait at the airport for 5 hours till the other volunteers arrived. That was fine because thats when i got the full low down on belize. Then from Belize City there is a 3 and a half hour BUS ride to San Ignacio where i am staying! The drive was long but well worth it. The country side is beautiful and all the houses are painted crazy colors like lime green and bright blue and coral. Its really funny. So we arrived and went to a member of the churches home to have dinner. Chicken, mashed potatoes and tortillas... not to bad for my first foreign meal. After that we went to the house to get to know the rest of the team (there are a total of 24 of us) we live in the first story of a house and sleep on foam mattresses. Luckily my self and another girl got the pull out couch and it was amazing but by bed time the cement floor probably would have felt good. I slept like a rock. First day done.

Check in later for Pictures and day two!
